EMP 1500 MILES FROM HOME edition by Mike Whitworth Literature Fiction eBooks

I have read many post-EMP books since I believe that scenario is quite possible. This book comes closest to what I believe will happen. Some will die early, tribes will form, and the military will try to exert control for its own benefit. Like the author, I know good people will die but I believe the good will prevail. Very enjoyable read.

EMP 1500 MILES FROM HOME edition by Mike Whitworth Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Well written story, of Wayne Zane, a salesman who is trapped in New Mexico, by a EMP. It is his story at first then he is joined by several others who are traveling with him as he struggles to return to his home in Indiana, where his wife and Son are at.

It is an interseting story with him encountering the worst and best of the survivors of the EMP, as the world around him is reset. He will meet an 15 year old boy, who was discarded to an Children's home , by his Aunt after his folks are killed in an accident. The story shows him and others becoming a Family for the brilliant young Man.

Easy to read and time passes rapidly reading the story, as the bad part of Society wants to take everything including the lives of his family.
I almost didn't get this book due to some of the bad reviews, but in so glad I did! This is a well written story about real people with real lives and real problems. There are some very unexpected twists and turns. In the end I fell in love with the characters and I can't wait to read the next book.
This is one of the better books I've read of this genre. The characters and the situations they find themselves in are believable, and the story draws you along wondering what will happen next. The fact that the author didn't use the book to show off how much he knows about the intricate details of every piece of gear he mentions was a big plus.

Some reviewers have been bothered by the relationship that develops between the main male and female characters. Right or wrong, it develops after months of shared hardship and uncertainty, including the uncertainty of whether his wife is still alive or whether he will ever be able to get back to her. I guess there are saints among us, but I tend to think that most people in their circumstances -- the world as we know it has ended, and they rely on each other for their very existence over a long period of time -- would eventually fall for each other. At the same time they would, as the characters in the book do, feel a certain amount of guilt based on normal world ethics.

Bottom line if you want a very good post-apocalypse action/adventure story, and can accept that the cultural norms of our safe orderly world might sometimes be violated, this book will not disappoint.
This book was on my to read list for some time and I'm so glad it finally made it's way to the top of the list. I'm not sure why I like these types of stories, some are too far out there for the most part, but Whitworth hit's the nail on the head. Scary as this story is, the sad thing, I believe this is just how humans would behave if an EMP ever happens.

The story is told by the three main characters. I found myself wanting to meet these people in person. Their emotions tugged at my heart strings and I feared for their lives. I want the new family group to stay together and live happily ever after, however I understand the ties that pull them East.

My life doesn't permit much reading time, but I could hardly wait for the evening hours when I could dive into this story. Instead of going to the next book on my to read list, I immediately purchased the next book in this series. Mike Whitworth, you have me hooked. Good stuff. Keep up the great writing.
Likes this one from page one. Spoiler alert.

This one starts with Wayne Zane. Zane is a salesman and he's in Socorro, New Mexico. As he's driving into town Wayne sees a sever thunderstorm over the mountains. He is glad he won't be driving in it. Wayne is a big guy. Everything about Wayne is big. He stands 6'6" tall and has huge shoulders. He's wears a size 16 shoe and weighs around 245 pounds. He's just one big guy.

Once at the site of the meeting Wayne is waiting to attend the lights go out. The receptionist doesn't seem to concerned so Wayne assumes the lights out is something that happens frequently. The man he is meeting appears and tells Wayne they will meet the next day. Wayne leaves with a promise for tomorrow.

As he gets to the parking lot Wayne see's a red glow over the mountains. He's hoping that red glow isn't what he thinks it is. Wayne tries to start his car in the parking lot along with a few other people. Nothing. No radio, nada zip and the Jeep won't even turn over.

Wayne talks to no one in the parking lot. He doesn't know any of them and doesn't want to tell them about what he thinks has just happened. He walks back to his hotel, grabs what he will need. He travels light and doesn't bring what he needs for survival as those items are frowned upon by airport security.

Wayne's Father in law is a prepper a Vietnam war vet and a Medal of Honor winner. He's a man everyone calls Cap. He was special forces and he has taught Wayne how to shoot, fight and survive. He and Wayne have talked about what has happened. An EMP has hit and knocked out the electrical grid. Nothing with a computer in it will work now. Cars, planes, trains, cell phones and anything new is useless. Older vehicles will work but there aren't many of them around. Wayne heads out for his long walk to Indiana and his wife and son.

Julie is watching TV when the power goes out. Julie isn't concerned and thinks the power will be on in a few hours. The power doesn't come back on and her cell is dead even though she charged it earlier. Julie is now feeling uneasy and gets her gun and drops into her apron pocket. She then checks her shotgun to be sure its loaded. It is.

Julie is part Apache and has the gift. The gift of The Knowing as its called. Julies Mom had a strong gift but Julies is only sporadic and she doesn't always trust it. But this time she was going to trust her feelings.

Julie trust them when Wayne makes an appearance at her trailer. A Wayne who was looking for supplies, food and water after he was robbed and nearly killed. Julie and Wayne decide to travel to her family ranch in Mountainair, New Mexico. Its a journey that will be full of danger.

Three men break into Julies home and Wayne kills them all with Julie's shotgun. Julie now has an idea that Wayne is one capable guy. They both go to a neighbors house where they find a knife and water which they will need, some food and an old surplus WWII Russian battle rife. A Mosin Nagant the long version with attached folding bayonet. He also finds five boxes of ammunition for the gun. A gun that will save their lives.

Once on their way they meet two men on horseback. Two men who want Julie. The Nagant is one good rifle and Wayne kills them both. They now have two horses and the weapons the two carried and any supplies they had. Their journey is just beginning

Yeti is a fifteen year old kid. He stands 6'5" or 6'6" tall and weighs around 400 pounds. Yeti is tall and very fat. He's always been an object of ridicule from the other kids at the orphanage. His Aunt took his brother but didn't want him so he ended up in an orphanage.

Yeti is highly intelligent, in fact he's a genious. Yeti also knows a EMP has hit and he knows he must leave. He grabs a cart and loads it with supplies and slips out of the orphanage. He feels a little guilty about leaving the other kids but knows he can do nothing for them.

On his journey out of town he meets Wayne and Julie. A Wayne and Julie who decide Yeti will travel with them. A decision which will have benefits for all three.

So begins a damned fine read.

This one has Wayne, a very capable and savvy Wayne, Julie, Yeti, horses, a Yeti who is walking off those useless pounds, a Yeti who's an empath, a Julie who is falling in love with Wayne, a married man, a man who needs to get home to his wife Lucy and son Ben, traveling and taking all precautions to not be seen. Wayne knows that soon people will kill you for what you have and he wants to make sure that no one sees them, the horses that make the trip easier, a Julie who grew up around horses and is the head wrangler for the three, good people they meet along the way, bad people, people who will kill you and take what you have, murder, death, a wounded Wayne, a mountain pass, the military who are in that pass, gunfire, an alternate way up the mountain, the trip through a freezing storm, lightening, a man named Cotter and his wife, the arrival of the military, demands made, men Wayne doesn't think are military at all, ranchers who band together and come up with a plan, a plan that works, the town of Moutainair, the people there, the mayor, Julies Father, George Hoffman, his ranch the Double, H, the kidnapping of Wayne, a mine, a dwarf named Dave who's a geologist, a man named Max, escape, capture, another escape, a fight in a pit, the Boss, a Wayne who stays at the ranch for the Winter, a Wayne who decides being a trader will make his journey East much easier, those who want to come with him and Wayne Zane doing his best to get to his family, help those he can and stay alive.

Five Stars. Great read.
